The Vicentina Route

Today’s route begins in the charming fishing village of Porto Covo, known for its wild, unspoiled beaches and immortalized in a popular Portuguese song. The atmosphere here is shaped by long-standing traditions, dramatic cliffs, and small coves with crystal-clear waters.

This stage is intentionally shorter, giving you time to enjoy the village at a relaxed pace — whether that’s trying freshly grilled fish or simply unwinding in one of the cafés on the main square.

From the village, your walk continues along the scenic west coast toward Pessegueiro Beach and its 16th-century fort, once built to defend this stretch of shoreline. As you take in the views, look out toward the horizon to spot its counterpart — the Fort of Saint Albert on the small island just offshore.

This day’s walk follows a beautifully crafted section where several historic Vicentina trails meet. The route opens up to far-reaching hilltop views, crosses small streams over wooden bridges, and winds through generous woodland that offers welcome shade on warm days.

Vibrant fields dotted with seasonal wildflowers add bursts of colour to the landscape, while birdsong and the gentle sound of flowing water accompany you throughout the journey.

A relaxing day gives you the freedom to choose how you’d like to spend your time — rest at the hotel, read a book, or simply unwind at your own pace. If you feel like exploring, we suggest visiting the nearby towns. Start with Odemira, a quiet village where life moves slowly, or head to Vila Nova de Milfontes, loved by the Portuguese for its excellent grilled fish and stunning views over the Mira River estuary with its clear, refreshing waters. For a coastal escape, drive to Zambujeira do Mar and enjoy one of the most memorable sunsets in the country.

Today’s walk follows the Seixe River as it winds through gardens and meadows, leading to the charming village of Odeceixe.

From there, the Fishermen’s Trail takes you through a network of wetlands, vital for local wildlife, and continues to the coast where the waters from Monchique flow into the ocean. Pause at Odeceixe Beach to soak in the view — it’s no wonder this beach is considered one of Portugal’s most beautiful.

After a refreshing break, the trail continues south along the coastline before turning inland through tranquil farmland, combining rivers, sea, and countryside in one scenic day.

Set out on the final section of the Vicentina route, where dramatic coastal scenery and hidden rocky coves await. Southwest of Aljezur, the small village of Carrapateira is tucked behind protective dunes. With its whitewashed houses, it has quietly become a haven for surfers and a peaceful stop along the trail. The walk leads to headlands where secret beaches lie, visible only to nesting birds and adventurous visitors with cameras.

If time allows, a visit to the nearby town of Aljezur is highly recommended. Wander its charming streets and discover the heritage of this ancient Moorish settlement.

As your journey approaches its grand finale, the last stage of the Vicentina route awaits. Beginning in the small town of Vila do Bispo, this walk offers sweeping countryside views, dramatic cliffs, and a legendary cape once thought to be the edge of the world.

The Fishermen’s Trail concludes at Cape Saint Vincent, the southwestern tip of Europe. This striking geological headland has been a backdrop for stories of explorers and pirates, and today it’s a prime site for watching migratory birds.

Before ending the day, we highly recommend a visit to the nearby village of Sagres — a fitting final highlight of the Vicentina Route.
