The Guadiana Valley Route follows a scarcely populated region of striking landscapes, where quiet hills, riverbanks, and valleys reveal centuries of human history. Mértola and Alcoutim, two charming historic villages, are the base of this self-drive walking tour, offering a blend of heritage and natural beauty.
Along the route, the River Guadiana threads through hills, plains, abandoned mines, cork and oak woods, and small farming lands. Wildlife is abundant, from storks and birds of prey to freshwater fish, while traces of past civilizations, Roman ruins, and windmills add a human touch to the scenery. Across the river, the Spanish village of San Lucar hints at old trade and smuggling history.
Walkers follow the route at their own pace, enjoying views and tasting local specialties like wood-fired bread, olive oil, wild asparagus, mushrooms, truffles, and fine wines. The tour blends independent walking and driving with serene landscapes of the Guadiana Valley.
A self-guided, non-driving option of the tour with transfers is also available.
