Explore the Gems of Portimão

This day’s walk explores the serene Alvor estuary, a protected natural haven rich in diverse habitats. Following quiet paths and countryside lanes, you’ll pass through salt marshes, farmland, peaceful pastures, and fragrant orchards — an ideal setting for spotting birdlife, so keep your binoculars handy.

As the trail winds along the secluded inner lagoon, you’ll enjoy shifting shades of blue and green and encounter the striking Rocha Delicada, an ochre promontory dating back to the Miocene period. Embedded in its limestone face, you can still find marine fossils — remnants of ancient oysters, scallops, and clams.

The walk concludes in the charming village of Mexilhoeira Grande, where inviting cafés and restaurants offer the perfect spot for a refreshing drink. If time allows before catching the train back to Portimão, take a leisurely stroll through the village’s quiet streets.
