Peneda-Geres National Park Adventure

Today you can enjoy two scenic walks around the village of Castro Laboreiro.
Start with a short circular hike up to the historic Castro Laboreiro Castle, whose origins date back to the founding of Portugal. The route leads gently above the village and is perfect for a relaxed morning outing, with time afterwards to stop at one of the local cafés.
In the afternoon, follow narrow mountain paths through dramatic rock formations west of the village, climbing into the hills and returning along gentler tracks, enjoying the rugged scenery.

The day’s planned trail follows part of a local waymarked trail, leading you into the valley below Castro Laboreiro and through several tiny hamlets. Along the way, you’ll get a glimpse of traditional farming practices and everyday rural life in this secluded region.

Start the day on pleasant, easy tracks that pass through local villages and continue into the moorland east of Castro Laboreiro. As the trail climbs toward the Spanish border, enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding region and the traditional rural life.

Begin your day heading eastwards from the first centre toward Peneda along an ancient mountain trail. The route descends into the area of Lamas do Mouro, where you can stop at one of the main information centres for the National Park.

The walk continues up to the head of the Peneda Valley, then descends alongside the River Peneda. The day concludes at your hotel in one of Portugal’s iconic pilgrimage centres, home to a remarkable sanctuary and its grand staircase.

Venture into the heart of the mountains on a walk that showcases some of the region’s most dramatic granite landscapes. Along the route, you’ll pass Bouça dos Homens, a small, isolated village nestled among five towering peaks at 1,070 m.

A descent into the valley below Peneda offers a day of contrasting scenery. The walk begins on the dramatic staircase and follows an ancient trail winding down the slopes. As you reach the lower, warmer valley, the vegetation becomes lusher and charming villages appear, shaped by the milder climate that supports diverse agriculture. Much of the route runs alongside local rivers, whose cascading waters lead you to the meeting point of the Peneda and Pomba rivers, creating a memorable highlight of the day.
