The Shivapuri hiking trail is one of the most popular day hikes in Kathmandu, offering a balanced combination of nature, culture, and a sense of calm. It provides a refreshing escape from the city, allowing hikers to slow down and experience a quieter, more peaceful side of the Kathmandu Valley.

Located on the northern edge of the valley within Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, the trail gradually ascends through protected forest areas toward Shivapuri Danda at 2,372 meters above sea level. Along the way, the surroundings open up to views of the Kathmandu Valley, the Langtang range, and, on clear days, distant Himalayan peaks.

The marked path leads through rhododendron and oak forests, accompanied by birdsong and occasional wildlife sightings. This hike offers not only a close connection with nature but also an insight into Nepal’s natural heritage, combining biodiversity, scenic viewpoints, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment in a single day.

Route details

In the early morning, the guide meets you at your hotel within a 4 km radius of Thamel and transfers you to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.

After arriving at the national park gate and completing permit formalities, the hike begins on forested trails passing through the Muhan Pokhari area. The route leads uphill through dense woodland toward Nagi Gumba, a Buddhist monastery set in a peaceful natural setting, offering insight into the area’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The ascent continues toward Shivapuri Peak, the highest point of the hike at 2,732 meters. From the top, enjoy wide views over the Kathmandu Valley and, in clear weather, distant Himalayan ranges. After a break at the summit, the trail descends along the same forest path back to the trailhead.

At the end of the hike, you return by vehicle to Kathmandu and are dropped off at your hotel or the original pickup point, concluding the Shivapuri day excursion.
