Route details

Day 1
Pokhara - Ulleri - Ghorepani

The journey begins in the morning with a scenic 1.5–2 hour drive from Pokhara toward the foothills of the Annapurna region. Instead of stopping early, the route continues as far as road conditions allow by 4WD vehicle, letting you start walking closer to the mountains and spend more time on the trail itself.

By around 9:00, the trek officially starts at Birethanti, where you enter the Annapurna Conservation Area. Once permits are registered at the checkpoint, the trek continues along the river valley, weaving through small settlements and subtropical forests beside the Bhurung Khola.

Around 11:30, a lunch break in Tikhedhunga provides a chance to refuel before the most challenging section of the day. Shortly after, at about 12:30, the trail crosses a suspension bridge and begins a steady climb up the famous Ulleri stone staircase. This long ascent is demanding but rewarding, with cooler air and the first distant views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli appearing as you gain height.

By mid-afternoon, around 15:00, the landscape changes noticeably. The trail eases as it enters dense rhododendron and oak forests above Ulleri, passing quiet resting points such as Banthanti and Nangethanti. These shaded sections offer a calmer pace and a welcome break after the climb.

The day concludes around 16:30 upon arrival in Ghorepani, a historic mountain village known for its blue-roofed houses. After a brief checkpoint, a short final ascent leads to your teahouse in Upper Ghorepani. From here, wide views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range set the scene for a peaceful evening in the mountains.

Tour provider's comments

This trek is considered easy and is well suited for beginner trekkers. The total distance covered is approximately 22 kilometers (13.7 miles), depending on the chosen route. Each day involves around 5–6 hours of walking on generally gentle terrain.

The highest point reached during the trek is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters. As the route does not involve extreme altitude gain, the risk of altitude sickness is very low. While the trek is not physically demanding, basic preparation, good fitness, and the ability to handle uphill sections—such as the Ulleri steps—are beneficial.

Tea Houses

During the trek, accommodation is provided in charming, family-run teahouses, offering a blend of rustic adventure and genuine Himalayan hospitality. Most rooms feature twin beds with mattresses, pillows, and clean sheets, and many have large windows framing spectacular views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) or Dhaulagiri. Rooms are not heated, but wooden walls provide insulation, and heavy blankets are supplied; bringing a sleeping bag liner is recommended for extra warmth and hygiene. Each teahouse has a central dining hall with a wood-burning stove where trekkers gather in the evenings, enjoy freshly prepared full-board meals, and share stories.

Meals include traditional Nepali dishes such as Dal Bhat as well as simple international options.

Modern facilities vary by location: lower villages may have attached bathrooms, while higher areas typically have shared bathrooms, with a mix of Western-style and squat toilets. Hot showers are available for a small fee, usually powered by solar or gas systems. Charging for electronic devices and limited Wi-Fi is generally offered for a small additional cost, allowing you to stay connected enough to share photos and updates.
