This short yet rewarding Himalayan adventure offers a sense of solitude and connection to nature. Unlike busier trails, it takes you through dense forests, quiet ridges, and alpine landscapes where the mountains feel close and personal.

The trek stays near Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), keeping the sacred peak in view throughout. Panoramic sights of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre unfold continuously from forested hills to high alpine ridges. Along the way, traditional teahouses provide warm meals and a glimpse of local life.

Over five days, you ascend from the lower green hills into high-altitude terrain above 4,500 m, walking steadily through stone paths, mossy forests, and open ridges. Early starts, gradual acclimatization, and quiet ridge trails allow you to enjoy sunrise vistas, alpine flora, and the immersive serenity of the less-traveled Himalayas.

This trek is ideal for hikers with moderate fitness seeking a short, high-altitude adventure that combines natural beauty, panoramic views, and cultural experiences without a multi-week commitment.

Route details

Day 1
Pokhara - Kande - Deurali

You start your day early with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Kande, a small hilltop settlement that marks the official trailhead. The road winds through terraced hillsides, traditional Gurung villages, and open countryside, offering your first glimpses of the Annapurna range as you ascend.

From Kande, the trek begins on a series of stone steps climbing above the forest canopy. Along the way, clear views of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) reward your efforts.

After passing Australian Camp, the trail becomes gentler, winding through forested terrain toward Pothana village, where the first ACAP permit checkpoint is located. Here, the path softens, with forest soil cushioned by roots and moss, while the canopy provides welcome shade.

The final section leads through quiet woodland to Deurali (2,100 m), perched at a natural junction of ridges. From here, you can admire the Modi Khola valley below and the rising slopes of Mardi Himal ahead. As evening falls, Deurali settles into a tranquil atmosphere, setting the tone for the higher terrain to come.

Tour provider's comments

This trek is suitable for beginners with basic fitness as well as experienced trekkers. The trail passes through forest paths, ridges, and includes some steep sections, particularly above Low Camp. While no technical climbing skills are required, a reasonable level of fitness and proper acclimatization are essential.

This trek is often recommended as an introductory high-altitude Himalayan trek for those new to trekking in the region. The highest point is Mardi Himal Base Camp or Upper Viewpoint at about 4,500 m above sea level. The route is well-marked, so it can be done independently, with teahouse owners and fellow trekkers available to assist with navigation. However, many choose to hire a licensed guide for added safety, local insight, and help with permits and logistics.

Accommodation

Comfort
Basic
Camp Site
4 nights

You’ll stay in traditional mountain teahouses rather than modern hotels. These lodges are essential parts of the trekking experience — offering shelter, meals, and local hospitality along the trail.

4 nights
Teahouses

Teahouses along the Mardi Himal route are basic but functional, providing the essentials to rest and refuel after a day on the trail.

Rooms are simple but comfortable, usually with twin beds and mattresses. Blankets are provided, though most trekkers bring a sleeping bag rated around –10 °C for extra warmth.

Bathrooms are shared, and at higher elevations, toilets are often basic squat-style. Some teahouses offer hot showers for an additional fee.

Most teahouses feature a communal dining hall with a wood stove for warmth and socializing. Wi-Fi and device charging are usually available for a small extra charge, especially at Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp. Room prices typically range from NPR 500–1,500 per night, increasing slightly at higher camps or during peak season.

The teahouse experience is friendly and authentic, with trekkers from around the world sharing meals, stories, and space. It’s not luxury, but it is safe, comfortable, and immersive, offering a genuine taste of Himalayan trekking life.
