Experience a week among the wild landscapes and jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains, spanning Albania and Montenegro. Starting from Shkodra, the journey begins with a scenic boat ride across the fjord-like Komani Lake into the heart of the Albanian Alps. Trek through the remarkable Valbona Valley and the pristine Gashi River Reserve, reaching the remote summer pasture of Doberdol for a night in traditional shepherd’s huts.

At Mt. Tromedja, where three countries meet, enjoy panoramic views and the sense of hiking beyond borders. Continue into Montenegro’s Prokletije National Park, swim in the serene waters of Lake Hrid, and climb the double peaks of Taljanka and Popadija above the dramatic Grbaja Valley. Follow an ancient path back into Albania, exploring the picturesque village of Theth and learning about the former highland laws of the Kanun. The adventure concludes with a refreshing swim at Nderlysaj’s glacier stone pools and a transfer back to the lively capital, Tirana.

This trip is available for a minimum of 2 people (€1119 per person) in self-guided mode.
3 pax — €950; 4 pax — €863. Single supplement: €70.

Route details

Day 1
Tirana - Shkodra

Transfer from Tirana (airport or city) to Shkodra takes about two hours; optional transfers from Podgorica are available on request. Upon arrival, you receive your roadbook, maps, phone and GPS device, followed by a brief introduction to the tour.

After settling in, you can explore Shkodra’s pedestrian center with its historic townhouses, visit the bazaar, or stop by the Marubi photo library. A short taxi ride brings you to Rozafa Castle for panoramic views. If time allows, you may also rent a bicycle to visit the lake-side villages of Shiroka and Zogaj for a fish meal and a splash in the Balkan's largest lake. Alternatively, enjoy an espresso or browse local artisan shops. In the evening, you can choose one of the many local restaurants for dinner and enjoy a drink at a bar, all while keeping tomorrow’s early start in mind.

Those arriving early can store extra luggage at the hotel for collection after the tour.

Your trip begins and ends with 3-star hotel stays in Shkoder and Tirana, where single supplements are available. In the mountains, private rooms are limited, so single rooms are possible only in the cities. You’ll stay in private rooms throughout the journey, although shared bathrooms may be part of the experience. We do our best to provide double or twin rooms, but availability can vary. On rare occasions, travelers from the same group may be accommodated in triple or quad rooms.

Hotel in Shkoder

Tradita Geg & Tosk Hotel and Restaurant, is located in Shkodra city. It is an old traditional house dating 1694, a nice traditional place, surrounded by an ethnography which Mr. Gjon Dukgilaj successfully transformed into a restaurant and hotel. Built with typical elements such as stones and wood, the interior is furnished, decorated with the old authentic objects and traditional costumes from the area. Seasonally the owner transforms the complex into a museum in order for the clients to enjoy the Albanian culture atmosphere.
