Embark on one of the Balkans’ wildest routes along Albania’s High Scardus Trail — a trek crafted for hikers seeking untouched landscapes, authentic encounters, and a true sense of remoteness.

The route leads through the Northeastern highlands, crossing glacial valleys, open alpine meadows, high passes with sweeping views, and the traditional stone villages of Dibra. Along the way you’ll sample local produce, meet welcoming hosts, and, if you wish, summit Mt. Korab (2,764 m), the highest peak of Albania and North Macedonia, before ending in vibrant Tirana.

We take care of logistics — transfers, luggage transport, accommodation, and route materials — so you can hike at your own pace, whether self-guided, with a private guide, or within a group. The trail follows ancient caravan paths once known as Scardus, “the colorful mountains,” reflecting both the landscapes and cultures you’ll encounter.

This trip is available for a minimum of 2 people (€938 per person) in self-guided mode.
3 pax — €825; 4 pax — €725. Single supplement: €65.

Route details

Day 1
Tirana - Kukes

We meet at the airport or in Tirana for a tour walk-through, a Q&A session about the coming days, and to hand over your roadbook, maps, phone, and GPS device. Luggage can be stored in Tirana at your final hotel. The transfer from Tirana (airport or city) to Kukes takes about two and a half hours, optional transfers to Shishtavec are available on request.

Kukes is a small city in northeastern Albania overlooking the confluence of the White and Black Drin Rivers. The views of towering Mt. Gjallica (2,489 m) offer a preview of the scenery ahead. You’ll stay in a simple local pension with a restaurant and have the chance to stock up on snacks or join the locals on an evening stroll to the former regime hotel overlooking the lake.

Tour provider's comments

The trail is suitable for fit hikers, ideally with previous trekking experience. This is a point-to-point trek with 6–8 hours of walking per day through the remote Eastern Highlands. The route includes a long ascent to Mt. Korab (optional), the highest peak of Albania and North Macedonia, at mid-route. Trails are mostly grassy and less rocky than in the Accursed Mountains, so walks of similar length may feel comparatively easier here.

The accommodation is both rustic and genuinely authentic. You’ll start and end the journey in a hotel, while the middle section takes you through warm, welcoming guesthouses (including one of our all-time favorites!). One night is spent in simple shepherd huts — a barebones stay that offers an unforgettable taste of life in the summer alp. What it lacks in comfort, it more than makes up for in charm and atmosphere.
