Algarve Road Trip: Villages, Nature and Coast

Begin the day by heading into Albufeira for a look at its historic centre and the remaining 18th-century churches that survived the 1755 earthquake. After leaving town, the route quickly shifts to a quieter landscape with small clusters of houses. Passing through Ferreiras, you’ll notice traditional architectural elements before continuing along the winding EM 395, where windmills and waterwheels appear along the way.

Continue south toward Vilamoura to explore its Environmental Park and, if you wish, stop by the archaeological site of Cerro da Vila. From here, make your way along the coastline, taking in the succession of beaches — Praia da Falésia, Praia do Barranco das Belharucas, Olhos de Água, Praia Maria Luísa, and Praia da Balaia — before returning to the hotel.

Start the day by leaving the busy coastal areas behind and heading inland, where ceramic kilns and quiet streams shape a different Algarve. Your first stop is Rocha da Pena, known for its varied plant life and bird species. Take some time to walk through the area and appreciate the surrounding landscape.

Continue on to Querença, a village set between two streams and centred around its main square, where the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption) stands with its Manueline doorway.

As the day progresses, make your way to São Brás de Alportel, an area recognised for its high-quality cork and the cork oak groves that define the landscape. Before the day ends, visit the Museum of Costumes for an insight into local traditions.

Today’s route leads you to the Ria Formosa, a lagoon system stretching from Faro eastwards and known for its fishing villages, seafood, and long beaches.

From here, make a wider loop toward Moncarapacho, a small village framed by pomegranate-lined streets and home to Moncarapacho Pottery, where traditional pieces are still produced. In the centre, you’ll find 19th–20th-century houses, the main church with origins in the 15th century, and the Parish Museum beside the Chapel of Espírito Santo.

Continue by driving up to Cerro de São Miguel, standing 411 metres high and offering one of the region’s finest viewpoints. Afterwards, head into the Ria Formosa Nature Park, which runs from Cacela Velha to Ancão. Near Olhão, the Interpretation Centre in Quinta de Marim provides a good introduction to the area’s natural life before you end the day.

At a convenient time, transfer to Faro Airport for your departure. If time before you flight allows, you can enjoy a final stroll through the old town or relax in a local café before leaving. Alternatively, you can prolong your stay on your own.
