Algarve Beyond the Beaches: Culture & Heritage

Begin your day in Monte Gordo, a coastal town where colourful fishing boats still line the wide sandy beach. Its calm, warm waters and long-standing traditions make it one of the Algarve’s most charming seaside stops.

Continue to Vila Real de Santo António, skirting a peaceful stone-pine forest. This elegant border town, set on the Guadiana River opposite Spain, features a distinctive Pombaline layout inspired by Lisbon’s post-earthquake reconstruction.

Head north to Castro Marim, a quiet landscape of saltpans and nature reserves. Once home to a Roman port and later a stronghold of the Order of Christ, the town is known for its rich heritage, local salt and rustic crafts.

End the day in Cacela Velha, a tiny clifftop village offering what many consider the Algarve’s most stunning panoramic view—an unforgettable finale to the route.

Leave the coast behind and head into the hills, where the air carries the scent of carob and lavender and small villages keep long-held rural traditions alive. Drive to Cachopo, known for its whitewashed houses with colourful decorative parapets dating back to the 1930s. Wander through the village and visit the small local museum that highlights the heritage of the Serra.

Continue towards Barranco do Velho, one of the highest points in the region. This historic crossroads once linked the coast with the interior, and the area is dotted with traditional round schist houses with conical thatched roofs.

Finish the day in São Brás de Alportel, the heart of the Algarve’s cork-growing region. Its history is reflected in elegant tiled manor houses, iron-balconied façades, and a museum dedicated to the cork industry.

Today’s route follows the Guadiana River, the natural border of eastern Portugal.

Drive north to Foz de Odeleite, a small village perched above a ravine where the Odeleite meets the Guadiana. Its hillside houses, vineyards and riverside plots create a peaceful rural setting.

Continue to Guerreiros do Rio, home to a small museum that showcases the history of the Guadiana and its long fishing traditions.

A few bends further, Alcoutim appears high above the river, watched over by its 16th-century castle. This quiet border town holds stories of historic smuggling routes and close ties with neighbouring Andalusia across the water.

Head south towards Santa Rita along one of the Algarve’s most scenic roads. This transitional landscape between coast and hills is dotted with traditional houses and fertile valleys fed by small waterways

Travel west today to explore the Algarve of cliffs, coves and dramatic Atlantic scenery.

Drive to Faro, the region’s historic capital. Wander through its old walls, tile-covered churches and narrow lanes where storks nest above the city’s archways. Continue to Senhora da Rocha, a clifftop chapel overlooking one of the Algarve’s most serene beaches, with wide golden sands and calm blue waters. Head west to Ferragudo, a charming village on the Arade River, known for its fishing heritage and small castle guarding the bay.

Further ahead, Vila do Bispo marks the transition to the wilder Atlantic coast, where the landscape grows rougher and the ocean air intensifies.End the day in Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, Europe’s southwesternmost point. Here, a lighthouse stands above towering cliffs, offering sweeping ocean views and access to quiet, hidden beaches below.
